| NCCI statement released on the occasion of the 63rd anniversary of the Indian Independence Day |
|
That India is free and should continue to be so is the pride and dream of every Indian citizen. On the occasion of the 63rd anniversary of declaration of an Independent India the National Council of Churches in India (NCCI)
- commends the scientists and artisans involved in path-breaking innovations in all fields of national importance and international reputation including Agriculture, Medicine, Economics, Industry, Trade, Commerce, Science, Technology, Information, Communication, Media, Peace-building, Community organizing, and Peoples’ movement for affirmative action
- commends the law-makers both in the government and in the opposition for times in which constructive collaborative efforts were exhibited, as also for addressing and overcoming times in which their desire to be patient and maintain the dignity and decorum of their office was tested
- commends the administration and the judiciary for their efforts to maintain and nurture a consciousness of civility in the polity of the nation and in those relating to governance of her citizens
- commends the jawans and officers of the National and Civil Defence Corps including the police and para-military forces for the exemplary courage and discipline exercised in the performance of their duty to safeguard the national borders and the integrity of the Nation in difficult times and under demanding conditions.
- commends the resilience and affirmative ways in which the poor and the disadvantaged have dealt with the situations forced on them by successive governments all of whom had accelerated the exclusivist economic policies and trends
The NCCI invites all citizens of this great nation to unite
- in condemning perpetuation of depravity and all manifestations of violence whether by the State, armed groups, or on account of the insensitivity of the silent majority
- in addressing the efforts by those in positions of advantage, whether independently through exertion of illegitimate power or in nexus with people in power, to displace peoples from their natural habitats even if under the guise of national interest
- in standing up to all attempts to divide and discriminate people based on caste, religious and ideological orientations, ethnicity, language, literacy, region or through manipulation of any other manifestation of plurality
The NCCI, an expression of the will and aspirations of 13 million Indian Citizens who are by faith oriented to the Christian Protestant and Orthodox traditions, further urges her fellow citizens
- to seize every opportunity to participate in the democratic processes including in the upcoming elections to the legislatures of the states and in the elections to other local bodies
- to contribute to the process of opinion building built into the framing of new legislations and in the processes which mobilize public opinions on existing laws including the Right to Education Act, Armed Forces Special Powers Act, Food Security Bill, the Women’s Reservation Bill, Nuclear Liability Bill, etc.
- to join efforts of civil society organizations expressing solidarity through such participation over issues of importance relating to Climate Justice, Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty, Arms Trade Treaty, policy on mining, rights of the sexually discriminated communities, and people living with AIDS
- to join in the Churches’ initiatives to realize justice to Dalit Christians and Dalit Muslims who have been structurally discriminated based on the faith that they profess
- to understand and acknowledge the specifities and peculiarities of the issues of the people of the North East India in their struggle and search for an affirmation of ethnic identities in the context of a diverse and plural Indian reality
- to offer service wherever and in whatever manner possible, individually and through communities and organizations to which they belong, in accompanying those who are found to be at a loss in the current manifestation of society wrought about by the adoption of economic policies presently pursued, and to help them find an integration in the process
- to commit both in word and deed to the ideals of justice for all, elimination of caste system, equitable distribution of wealth, equity in gender orientation and practice, and campaign for responsibility of the state to those at a disadvantage
- to recognize governance as responsibility and vocation of every citizen and not to leave it to the politicians and their business peers.
