Press Release on the occasion of 61st Republic Day of Indian Nation

The National Council of Churches in India (NCCI) on behalf the - Constituent Protestant and Orthodox Churches in India, Regional Councils of Churches, All India Christian Organisations, Related Agencies and the Autonomous Bodies of the Council – salutes the citizens of the Country for upholding the spirit of the Country’s strong democratic systems, diverse faith and ideological persuasions and rich secular traditions. The NCCI recognizes that it is this conscientious spirit of every citizen that continues to nurture the spirit of plurality within which the Country holds together as one united Nation.

The Constituents of the NCCI dedicate themselves in the service of the Nation particularly to the ‘last, the lost and the least’ of her fellow-citizens. The Constituents appeal to their members, and their fellow-citizens, to continue to address with single-minded devotion the debilitating forces of mono-culture, forced impoverishment, the culture of insensitivity to the disadvantaged, perpetuation of caste-based hegemony, undermining of tribal and ethnic identities, and the discrimination based on religion, while working toward building a better tomorrow for ALL.

The NCCI appeals to the Law and Policy makers to keep the flag of collegiality and comradeship flying high in all matters of polity and public governance, through which the interests of the Nation could be addressed in ways that would reduce the numbers of those citizens branded as living below the poverty line and consequently improving ‘quality-life’ for each citizen irrespective of the quantum of his / her economic worth.

“Into that heaven of Freedom, . . . let my Country awake !”
