A Study and Public Debate on the Indian Church and Section 377

Posted byChristopher Rajkumar

Dear fellow pilgrim in Ecumenical Journey!

Greetings from the NCCI –CJPC!

Sub: Indian Church and repealing of the Section 377 of IPC:
A Study and Public Debate

The NCCI – Commission on Justice, Peace Creation is taking an initiative to study the Section 377 of the IPC which deals with the criminalization of unnatural sex offences from the light of recent suggestion from the Federal Law minister to take views before repealing the section from the Faith Based Organisations. Some FBOs and Right-wing political parties have already expressed their views and positions on the issue.

The High Court Judgement copy on this issue can be downloaded at: http://news.oneindia.in/common/documents/high-court-judgment-on.pdf

As a protestant Church, it is a right time for us also to deliberate on this issue by having deeper theological, sociological and legal deliberations from ‘ecclesiastical’ and ‘missiological’ world views. It is an attempt to listen and study both sides of the arguments forwarded.

On realizing this need the NCCI Commission on Justice, Peace and Creation is planning to organize a one-day study initiative in Chennai along with her constituent Churches and Organisations at ICSA  on the 28th July (Tuesday) 2009, from 10.00 a.m to 05. 00 p. m.

If you are in and around Chennai on 28th July 2009 please participate in it. Also, inform the Interested Individuals, Pastors, Lay Leaders and Social Workers, People with Different Sexual Orientation (PDSOs) and sexual minorities who live in Chennai, who could reason-out and can be vocal in public.

Programme Details can be downloaded here.

Thanking you in anticipation,

Yours in Solidarity,

R. Christopher Rajkumar,
Secretary, NCCI –CJPC
