India: Tsunami Impact

Most developed nation out of all the nations affected

Total people affected : 8,800 people confirmed dead, thousands missing. 

Tamil Nadu: 8,000; Pondicherry : 600; the Andaman and Nicobar islands : 4,000 confirmed dead and 5,542 are missing.

Total Cost of the tsunami to India : $1.6 Billion according to calculations from Citigroup.  Estimated damages in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands exceed $600 Million .

Worst affected community : Fishing Communities. The fishing town of Nagappattinam with its fleet of 10-metre trawlers and long, open boats,the pride of the Tamil Nadu coast, is one of the worst affected.  Officials estimate that only three of 15,000 fishing vessels along this stretch of coastline escaped damage.  Up to $125 Million needed to fix or replace damaged fishing vessels, buy new nets and lines.

Early Warning System: Cost $27 Million, up and ready in two to three The warning system would involve installing Deep Ocean Assessment Reporting Technology at a depth of six kilometres in the Indian Ocean and Bay of Bengal .

Cultural Damage:

  • India 's primitive indigenous tribes like the Jarwas, the Onges, the Sentenelese and the Shompens in Andaman and Nicobar Islands affected. Onges nearing extinction
  • The 14th-Century Masilamaninathar temple in Tamil Nadu, did not survive, as did four ancient temples in Kollam, Kerala, the Cellular Jail on the Andaman Islands , has also suffered some damage from the giant waves.
